What is the IB Extended Essay?

It’s a mandatory component of the IB Diploma Programme: an in-depth, 4,000-word essay based on independent research. Students choose a subject and a focused research question, then produce a formal academic paper with proper citation. It’s different from a standard college essay or research paper in its specific IB assessment criteria.

The EE is graded against criteria (e.g. focus and method, knowledge and understanding, critical thinking, presentation, engagement). It must be in one of the approved IB subjects (Group 1–6: studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, the arts, or interdisciplinary). The 4,000-word limit is strict; the reflection (RPPF) is separate. We draft or revise the essay body and can align with your supervisor feedback.
