2. Standard research paper structure

Many disciplines use a similar flow:

• Title / Title page — clear, descriptive title.
• Abstract — short summary (often 150–250 words): aim, methods, main results, conclusion.
• Introduction — context, research question or hypothesis, why it matters, brief roadmap of the paper.
• Literature review — what’s already known; gaps your work fills. Can be part of the introduction in shorter papers.
• Methods — how you collected and analyzed data (design, sample, tools, procedure).
• Results — what you found (facts and figures; save interpretation for Discussion).
• Discussion — what the results mean, limitations, implications, future research.
• Conclusion — restate main findings and takeaway.
• References — full list of sources.

3. Outlining step by step

Step 1: Write your research question or thesis in one sentence at the top. Step 2: List the main sections (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, etc.). Step 3: Under each section, add 2–4 subpoints or bullet ideas (e.g. under Methods: “Sample — 100 students”; “Instrument — survey”; “Procedure — recruitment, consent, data collection”). Step 4: Note which sources or data support each part. Step 5: Allocate rough word counts if you have a limit. Revise the outline until the flow is logical; then start drafting. 4. Common mistakes to avoid

Don’t skip the outline when the deadline is tight — a 15-minute outline prevents hours of rewriting. Don’t mix results and discussion in the outline; keep “what you found” separate from “what it means.” Don’t forget the abstract and references in your plan.
